Once a pass-line bet has a point established you technically already “lost” the roll.
The problem with place/odds is that if you made it to that point, the place bet was the superior choice however, that’s clearly “hindsight is 20/20” because if the roll were a 7, the pass line bet pays better. The dealer wasn’t lying to you in that the place bets pay better, but the risk is higher due to the first roll. If a 7 hits, bet #1 loses $18 and bet #2 gains $10. The advantage that the pass line has on a place bet is the first roll. Total payout from hitting the number twice: $22 It pays out $10 for the original $10 invested. You lay odds, let’s say $10 to match the $18 invested above. Total payout from hitting the number twice is $54.
