Once a pass-line bet has a point established you technically already “lost” the roll.
The problem with place/odds is that if you made it to that point, the place bet was the superior choice however, that’s clearly “hindsight is 20/20” because if the roll were a 7, the pass line bet pays better. The dealer wasn’t lying to you in that the place bets pay better, but the risk is higher due to the first roll. If a 7 hits, bet #1 loses $18 and bet #2 gains $10.
